Over 26 million BZP based social tonics have been consumed in
New Zealand
alone over the last 7 years with relatively few adverse events. However, concerns
have been voiced about their widespread availability. Consultation is
invited with consumers and other stakeholders on addressing these concerns.
Industry body STANZ advocates regulations to restrict sales
of the pills to retail outlets where entry is restricted to persons 18
years of age and over, and to prohibit signage or advertising in places
visible to children. Compliance with these regulations is underway.
It is clear that improvements could be made in education at a
retail level. It is proposed that the next step at the retail level is in
screening customers firstly for age identification, and secondly for
contraindications; “Are you on any medicines? Do you have any medical
conditions?” etc.
It is further proposed that standardised
information brochures on BZP based social tonics are made available at the
retail level.
The materials below have been developed for the purpose of
consultation with industry, consumers and key stakeholders around a
consumer screening process at the point of retail, and an informative
brochure which can be standardised for consumers.
